Title: Beyond the Mango Tree Author: Amy Zemser Publisher: Harper Trophy ISBN Number: 37262000614837 Copyright date: 1998 Number of pages: 165 Price: $1.99
1. Plot of the book. Sarina's mother is a diabetic. When she feels Sarina may leave she ties her to the mango tree in their yard. Sarina wants to find a friend to be around, that's when she meets Boima. Boima is the perfect person for her. Their friendship goes far beyond the mango tree and is an amazing experience for the both of them. They help each other with their problems and have a great time. Boima even tries to help her escape from the house. Their friendship takes them far enough to last a lifetime.
2. How accurate was the author at describing the disability. I believe the author was successful at describing the disability. In the book she mentioned things about the mother's sugars and how she had to take insulin. In real life diabetes you also have to take insulin and pay very close attention to your sugars. The mother has outbursts when her sugars are high or low making her tired or hyper. Diabetics have that issue in real life. All in all I believe the author did an excellent job at describing the disability.
3. Opinions I thought Beyond the Mango Tree was a unique and fasinating read. I had never heard of a book with a diabetic mother who ties her daughter to a mango tree whenever she feels that the daughter will leave her while living in Africa. It fasinated me because it really described the symptoms of the disability and what it was all about. I got a sense of what it was like to grow up in Africa too. The author really knew what she was talking about when she wrote this book. The whole time that I was reading I was deeply interested and amazed by the text. Beyond the Mango Tree was so great that I almost read it twice! I highly recommend it.
4. Who would like it? I believe any gender would enjoy this book ages 9-12 particualy if they are studying diabetes. In the book there was a lot of reference to Sarina's mother's diabetes. It talks a lot about the symptoms and the things that occur while living with it. This book could capture the attention of any person male or female. It is not too girly or too boyish. That is why I believe that any gender would enjoy this book no matter what.
